ELBOW PAIN CAN AFFECT FAR MORE THAN YOUR SPORT
Opening a jar. Carrying shopping. Using tools. Typing. Lifting a kettle. Even shaking someone’s hand.
When your elbow hurts, ordinary tasks can quickly become uncomfortable and frustrating.
One of the most common causes is tennis elbow — but despite its name, you don’t need to play tennis to develop it. Tennis elbow is an overload injury affecting the tendons that connect the wrist-extensor muscles to the outside of the elbow. It can develop through repeated gripping, lifting, twisting, racket sports, manual work, computer use or a sudden increase in activity. However, not every painful elbow is tennis elbow. Other possible causes include:
✔ Golfer’s elbow
✔ Elbow bursitis
✔ Nerve irritation
✔ Elbow arthritis
✔ Muscle or ligament strains
✔ Injuries following a fall or sudden overload
Signs that your elbow may need professional attention include:
⚠️ Pain or tenderness on the outside or inside the elbow
⚠️ Pain when gripping, lifting or twisting
⚠️ Reduced grip strength
⚠️ Pain when extending your wrist or fingers
⚠️ Stiffness or restricted movement
⚠️ Tingling, numbness or weakness
⚠️ Symptoms affecting your work, sport or daily activities
Resting completely is not always the answer. The right balance between reducing aggravating activities and gradually rebuilding the tendon’s capacity is an important part of recovery.
At Premier Clinic, your physiotherapy programme may include:
💙 A detailed clinical and movement assessment
💙 Advice on modifying aggravating activities
💙 Strategies to manage pain
💙 Gentle mobility and stretching exercises
💙 Progressive wrist, forearm and grip strengthening
💙 Technique and ergonomic guidance
💙 Support returning safely to work, exercise or sport
💙 Bracing, taping or other treatments when clinically appropriate
There is no one-size-fits-all exercise programme. Your rehabilitation should reflect the cause of your pain, how long you have experienced symptoms, your current tendon tolerance and what you need your arm to do.
Recovery times vary, but a structured, progressive programme can help you regain strength, improve function and return to the activities that matter to you.
Don’t keep working around elbow pain. Let’s assess the problem properly and help you move forward.
